Apocalypses and crucifixions

Cristo en el departamento, 1980

In 1981 Berni accomplished two large compositions, Apocalipsis and Crucifixión, which decorate the chapel of the San Luis Gonzaga school in the city of Las Heras. The subjects, traditional in Christian iconography, were modified by the artist with the purpose of serving contemporary concerns. That way Christ's passion represents the sacrifice of those who fight for ideals of justice, while it shows the tendency to crucify whoever stands out of the common. On their part, five horsemen of the Apocalypse hover over a world tempted by the whim of the market and dazzled by the fictions forged by the media.
